Mohenjo-Daro was a historic civilization that existed at the time of ancient Sindh. The history of Mohenjo Daro dates back to 2600 B.C. It is located 20 kilometres away from Larkana and 80 kilometres from Sukkar in Sindh and due to some unknown reasons, it went extinct. According to experts and geologists, it probably went into extinction due to the relocation of the river Indus, or flooding. Moreover, it is also believed that it ceased to exist due to attacks by other tribes.
Mohenjo-Daro was discovered by a British geologist and expert Sir John Marshall in 1922 one year later after the discovery of Harappa. And he started detailed excavation, to find the remains of the city. The word Mohenjo-Daro comes from the Sindhi language which means “The Mount of Dead”. The street in the city was wide and built according to proper infrastructure. Also, there was a proper water and sewage line which facilitates roughly 35000 people who lived there. According to the experts, this city was formed and destroyed at least 7 times. This makes the probability, that getting attacked is the reason for its extinction. According to the United Nations UNESCO, Mohenjo-Daro was considered as one of the world heritage sites. It is also considered the world’s oldest civilization ever existed.
The Life and Death of Mohenjo-Daro
Despite discovering the entire city and its remains, the map of the city is very sketchy. Many facts are still wondered to get discovered which includes the location of its cemeteries and the relationship of this city with another city. But the studies found that this city is connected and interlinked with smaller towns. Moreover, it is responsible for its food supply and other services. Experts also discovered that the city is built on a brick platform that is constructed to protect the houses from floods and heavy rainfall.
Its excellent town-planning
Though the history of Mohenjo Daro dates back thousands of years ago, its streets alignment and house making are still wondered. Its large houses are divided into rooms with proper water sewage system was built. The rooms were spacious and large surrounded by walls. The house was located between wide streets all around. Also to make bricks for the platform, mud from the trenches was used, which makes a huge ditch in the earth. This ditch was used to dump rubbish and sewage in the city. This method is still used in certain interior areas of Sindh.
Occupation of its people
Indus valley was also known for its irrigation system. Hence many people would be peasant farmers who rear bullocks and grow food. They used to make a living by cultivating enough food for themselves and selling the remaining. They took their excess food products to the cities to sell at market. Indus valley farmers grew wheat, barley, rice, mustard, sesame, dates, melons, and cotton, and that they raised cattle, water buffaloes, sheep, and pigs.
Surface discovery of the city shows that people were mostly craftsmen. It was impossible to do a detailed investigation because most of the remains of the city were destroyed and decomposed. Yet few crafts were found. The crafts were also made from mud extracted from the trenches. Bracelets and necklaces made from shells were also founded. They were aware of gold, silver, and other metals which was used to make pottery, jewellery, and statues. A dancing girl statue was found from its remains, this shows that people of Mohenjo-Daro were also into dancing.
The political system of Mohenjo-Daro
There are signs according to the history of Mohenjo Daro that prove that the Indus Valley Civilization had no monarchy. It had been probably governed by an elected committee. The map of the city shows that Mohenjo-Daro was the main city that is interlinked with other cities. To govern the people and run the city there must be some political bodies.

The people of Mohenjo-Daro were smart because their infrastructure was advanced despite the city lived thousands of years ago. At that time there were no signs of science and technology. Yet they had proper water facility, proper drainage system, art knowledge, clean water wells, spacious houses with room and wide street with flood proof base. If we gather these facts it is proved that the People of Mohen-jo-Daro were smarter and developed than other civilizations.
