Maqbara Noor Jahan Tomb Lahore:
Tomb of Queen Noor Jahan is located in Bagh-e-Dilkusha also called as Shahdara Bagh, Shadara Lahore. It was constructed by Malika Noor Jahan for herself. After the death of Emperor Jahangir, Queen Noor Jahan helped his son in law Prince Sheharyar to become the next emperor. Noor Jahan lost the battle and was imprisoned for lifetime by the next Emperor Shah Jahan. The Tomb has the graves of Queen Noor Jahan and her only daughter Ladali Begum. Maqbara Noor Jahan Tomb Lahore is one of the most famous tourist attractions of Pakistan.
Construction of the Tomb of Noor Jahan
The famous Noor Jahan Tomb was constructed by Queen Noor Jahan for herself as Emperor Shah Jahan disliked the burial of Noor Jahan with her husband in the Tomb of Jahangir. The tomb was constructed in 4 years’ time at a cost of 3 LAKH Rupees. The Tomb construction was financed by the annual pension of 2 LAKH Rupees given to the queen by the new emperor Shah Jahan.
Architectural Details
The Tomb of Queen Noor Jahan is similar to the Tomb of Jahangir but is without the Minarets on four corners and also smaller in size. The Tomb is laid out in Persian Style of Garden called Chahar Bagh. The Tomb is built on a square plinth. It was originally decorated with the inlaid red sandstone and while marble. The Tomb of Noor Jahan was stripped off its precious stone by the Sikhs to build the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The Tomb interior was decorated with floral patterns and fresco work.
Restoration of Maqbara Noor Jahan
Tomb of Noor Jahan was stripped off its marble by the Sikh Army in 19th century. Later the structure was damaged due to construction of Lahore-Peshawar Railway track in the garden of the tomb. As the Tomb of Noor Jahan is included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, so it has been renovated recently. UNESCO has restored the tomb to its original form. But the Tomb Garden is lost forever due to the numerous encroachments.
